Congratulations to GNA Chairman Frank Shimizu for his Imperial Decoration Conferment by the Japan Guam Consulate Office and the MOFA Japan office!  He was bestowed with The Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays Decoration for his contribution to enhancing the welfare of the Japanese American community in the United States and promoting friendly relations between Japan and the United States.

Guam Nikkei Association Board Chairman Frank S.N. Shimizu delivered the welcome remarks during the Guam Nikkei Association's panel discussion on A Borrowed Land, a groundbreaking publication by Peter R. Onedera that documents the experiences of Japanese Issei and Nisei in Guam during World War II. Held on March 29, 2025 at the Central Community Arts Center in Sinajana, the event was a collaboration with NHK Japan Broadcasting Corporation as part of its coverage of the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII.

Celebrating 50 Years of Friendship: Japan and Guam Strengthen Ties

The Consulate-General of Japan commemorated 50 years of enduring friendship and cooperation with Guam during a special reception held Wednesday evening at Hotel Nikko Guam. Members of the Guam Nikkei Association also participated in the event, joining dignitaries and community leaders in honoring the shared history and strong ties between Japan and Guam.  Enjoy the following snapshots!

Guam Nikkei Association Hosts Panel Discussion on "A Borrowed Land"

a Publication which Highlights the Japanese/CHamoru WWII Experiences in Guam

 

(Hagåtña, Guam) — The Guam Nikkei Association invites the public to a special panel discussion on the recently published book "A Borrowed Land" by Peter R. Onedera, which documents the experiences of Japanese Issei and Nissei during World War II in Guam.
This event is held in partnership with NHK Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), Japan’s internationally acclaimed broadcast network, as part of their coverage for the 80th Anniversary of the end of WWII. NHK will be conducting interviews with Mr. Onedera and members of Guam’s Japanese/CHamoru community to capture their stories.

 

"A Borrowed Land" is the first book of its kind to chronicle the unique WWII experiences of the Japanese CHamoru on Guam, compiled from years of interviews and research.

 

Event Details:

Date:   Saturday, March 29
Time:   4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Place:  Central Community Arts Center, Sinajana

 

The panel will be moderated by Guam Nikkei Association President David Okada and facilitated by Peter Onedera. Guam Nikkei Association Board Chairman Frank S.N. Shimizu will deliver the welcome remarks. Deputy Consul General Yoshiko KOBAYASHI from the Japanese Consulate will be an Observer.
